JW Gibson, a local businessman and community leader who has worked to revitalize Memphis and protect its historic legacy, issues the following statement with regard to the second degree murder charges of five Memphis police officers associated with the death of Tyre Nichols.

“Today, the police officers present at the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols have been charged with second-degree murder. I commend the Memphis Police Department and Police Chief Cerelyn Davis for moving swiftly and decisively to terminate the officers present, and thank the investigators and prosecutors for a timely evaluation of the evidence and recommended charges” says Gibson. 

 

“As these officers await their day in court, we must come together as a community. We must grieve with the Nichols’ family and find it within us to honor Tyre’s memory by seeking necessary change and justice. Justice is love in action, and as Memphians we must choose love.”
